When you work form home it can be a wonderful thing not having to participate in rush hour or office politics, but working from home can have it's downsides too. Here are some simple productivity tips.
1. Sometimes when you work from home family members and friends do not take you seriously because you are not wearing a suit! I have often had to ask family members to consider if I was working in a bank would they queue up to see me then ask me to leave my position to take them shopping? Even 'just this once?'
They would not and as I consider working for myself of more value than working for someone else I require more respect than would be afforded me if I worked in an office or a bank. There should be clear working hours set up and in that time I will not allow unimportant personal disturbances.
To ensure this you have to shut the door behind the family to make sure that they understand your commitment. Friends should get very short shrift if they call during work hours to have a chat. Now it is true that they would also call if you were working in an office, but in an office it would be much harder to slip into relax mode and decide to take the rest of the day off.
2. Take distractions off your desk top and your physical desk. Remove pictures that you can easily gaze at and drift off into when you need to work. Take off applications from your desktop that it would be oh so easy to click and read that email or take a quick peek at a site.
3. If needs be disconnect and turn off phones and various gadgets.
When you take yourself seriously you will find that others will too. You will find that when you do take the attitude to your productivity above you are training your brain to take your work seriously. This means that even when you feel a bit 'off' or tired you can still work through it if you choose because you have trained yourself to.
